You’re not ‘Progressive’

You know what I’m getting really sick of? Leftists skewering the English language to make their lifestyle and positions seem more palatable to the mushy middle in this country. Let’s see, you’ve already taken ‘gay’ from meaning ‘happy and joyous’ to meaning you poke each other in the butt. Which may make certain people happy and joyous, granted, but you’ve effectively taken the word out of usable existence for the rest of us. We’ll never be able to think of Fred and Barney having a ‘gay ol’ time’ the same way again.

(I won’t bother getting into the whole re-definition of ‘marriage’ here, since thus far you haven’t been able to wrangle that one.)

Liberal. What is the deal with taking ‘liberal’ from meaning ‘favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties’, which is a grand and very libertarian ideal. Hell, I’M a liberal by this definition! But when was the last time you heard of a ‘Liberal’ who was for less government, i.e. greater individual freedom? Gerald Ford said it well, “Government big enough to supply everything you need is big enough to take everything you have … The course of history shows that as a government grows, liberty decreases.” It’s a truism. Yet modern ‘liberals’ seem to believe and act in the exact opposite.

Then we come to ‘Progressive’. ‘Liberal’ has become a political dirty word, because people know what it means now. What they’ve skewed it to mean, anyway. So what do you want to call yourselves now? What makes it sound like you’re for something positive? ‘Progressive’. Hah.

What exactly is ‘progressive’ about what you believe in? Is it ‘progressive’ to advocate for hedonism? To lower expectations of human behavior to our lowest basic instincts? To ‘do it’ because it ‘feels right’? You want us to think and act like nothing more than animals. That’s not progression, that is REgression. You want us to eschew technology, rid ourselves of those nasty ‘carbon producing’ things we use to get to work and back. To ride bicycles, or walk wherever we need to go. Hell, some of you are so insane that you want to rid the world of the FLUSH TOILET for crying out loud! Taking the ‘progressive’ movement to it’s logical extremes, you won’t be truly happy until we’re all back living in the STONE AGE, letting the wild animals eat us because you don’t want us to be able to defend ourselves from them because it’s ‘naaaatural’…

Well let me tell you something. Progress, TRUE progress, of the human species is hallmarked by our ability to overcome nature. It’s overcoming our base instincts to form strong family bonds, to be loyal to one person of the opposite sex for our entire lives. To protect and defend those we love even at the risk of our own lives. It’s using science and technology to better the human condition, to make life easier, and bring aid and comfort to people we don’t even know in places we’ve never seen. It’s to uplift the spirit of man from a base and vile animal who wants nothing more than to give into those ‘natural’ desires of lust, greed, gluttony, laziness, anger, envy and pride. That is progress. That is ‘progressive’.

And it’s quite the opposite of what those who call themselves ‘progressive’ want for the world, now isn’t it?

You make very good points here.

  2. Hamburglar says:

And by that I mean pretty fucking bad points that are completely disconnected from reality.

Seriously, all you do is whine about liberals. Did a liberal run over your dog or something?

  3. hapajap says:

You know, Hamburglar, you remind me a lot of my old friend Chris.

He talks just like you when he forgets to take his Lithium too.

  4. Hamburglar says:

    Ba dum, tch!

    Some A+ material there, Hap!

  5. hapajap says:

Hey, it keeps you coming back day after day. :)

  6. FairlyObvious says:

    Progressive indeed . . .
When they started airing all those “Progressive Insurance” stuff my brother Jeff thought it was a horrible name because he related it to what liberals call themselves.
The whole “pro-choice” thing gets me too . . . and they get so offended when you tell them that they are simply pro-abortion, pro-murder, pro-death . . . Sorry pro-death until it involves a serial killer, then we just have to “reform” them.
    uuuugggghhhh

  7. Hamburglar says:

Btw, Hap, how do I post images?

  8. hapajap says:

You don’t. You can post the link, and I can edit it so it posts as an image if it’s not offensive.

  9. Hamburglar says:

    Really? Well, that’s pretty shitty.

  10. Duke of URL says:

There are enough real things to gripe about without a fake bitch about “gay” being used to mean “homosexual”. FYI, that is NOT a modern “progressive” invention – it dates back several hundred years.
Also, quit whining against same-sex partnerships. Although they don’t all work out, they have a better success rate than intersex ones. None of us really care if you call it a marriage – McLuhan notwithstanding, what you call it is NOT what it is. In this age of terrorism and other horrors, any couple finding love together and wanting to live happily forever after is to be praised and supported.

  11. FairlyObvious says:

You might wanna back up that “they have a better success rate” statement.

“In addition to its original and continuing senses of “merry, lively” and “bright or showy,” gay has had various senses dealing with sexual conduct since the 17th century. A gay woman was a prostitute, a gay man a womanizer, a gay house a brothel. This sexual world included homosexuals too, and gay as an adjective meaning “homosexual” goes back at least to the early 1900s. After World War II, as social attitudes toward sexuality began to change, gay was applied openly by homosexuals to themselves, first as an adjective and later as a noun. Today, the noun often designates only a male homosexual: gays and lesbians. The word has ceased to be slang and is not used disparagingly. Homosexual as a noun is sometimes used only in reference to a male.”

FYI, WWII did not end several hundred years ago.

  12. hapajap says:

All that aside, come on, the ‘Fred and Barney’ thing was a good line.

  13. Floppy Baby says:

Yeah! Lets get mad at those homosexuals from the gretest generation for taking a word they are already being called by others that was meant associated with prostitutes, womanizers and whore houses and turning it into something negatve!

  14. hapajap says:

Homosexuals weren’t part of the greatest generation. They weren’t allowed in the military back then.

Actually, this kind of brings up an issue, after WWII sexual attitudes did begin to change, and why was that? Precisely because homosexuals weren’t allowed in the military, and it was during this time that Kinsey was doing all his research, interviewing thousands of men about their sexual proclivities. Problem? All the men he should have been interviewing were at war or in the military and not allowed to take part in stuff like that. So his sample base? Men who couldn’t serve, and men in prisons.

He published his skewed report, like the good little liberal he was, and we’ve been suffering his perverted vision of sexuality ever since. I’m sure God has a special place in hell for that bastard.

  15. hapajap says:

Hamburglar, I notice you never posted your image. I assume it’s something I wouldn’t have approved of. lol

  16. Hamburglar says:

It was a picture of my dick, not gonna lie. :3

  17. CrackedPepper says:

FairlyObvious – your brother’s instincts about progressive insurance are spot on. Progressive’s Chairman is a big time Lib (sorry “Progressive”) who has donated buttloads of money to MoveOn.org, the ACLU, Marijuana Policy Project and America Coming Together, progressive organizations all.

  18. Watchy says:

Not for the first time, Hapa, I’d point out that your perspective on “liberals” and their stance on “the Governement” is pretty messed up… or rather, blinkered and tendentious.

How do you like them Patriot Acts and the other civil-rights-corroding jolly stuff those awful liberals of the Bush regime hoisted onto the US citizenry, BTW ?
