It’s only 2 or 3 generations for most blacks in this country. If your great, great, or great great great grandparent wasn’t a slave, it’s likely your family came here of their own free will. It might go back a couple more generations for some northern black families, but it’s really not that long ago in our history.
Or the world’s history, for that matter. Keep in mind that slavery wasn’t a uniquely American institution, it was a world-wide phenomenon, and that we were one of the earliest countries to abolish it. Not the first, but early.
